why proclaim someone to be a holy person ?

Don’t their life, work and actions speak for themselves ?

Why does any church need such Saints at all – and are churches using the “fame” and name of the proclaimed holy persons for their own profits and purposes?

These questions came into my mind when remembering the famous “Prayer of Peace” that’s often quoted by anyone who wants to make themselves look like a “good person”.

I am not a religious person in terms of any confession, but I have always found the life and work of Francis of Assisi quite inspiring. He has been reported to have lived a simple and authentic life and it was not his fault or goal that he was proclaimed a saint after his death by a pope.

The famous „Peace Prayer of St. Francis“ was an anonymously written text and does supposedly not stem from him, but was kind of assigned to him later by the Franciscan Order, as far as I know.

Here some quotes from Francis of Assisi himself that I like the most:

„I have been all things unholy. If God can work through me, he can work through anyone.“

„The deeds you do may be the only sermon some persons will hear today.“

„Not to hurt our humble brothers and sisters is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission – to be of service to them whenever they require it.“

„What is it that stands higher than words? Action. What is it that stands higher than action? Silence.“

„If you have men who will exclude any of God’s creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men.“

„He or she who works with their hands and their heads and their hearts are artists.“

Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received – only what you have given: a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.“

„All things of creation are children of the Father and thus brothers of man. … God wants us to help animals, if they need help. Every creature in distress has the same right to be protected.“

„Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible“.

„All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.“

„The only thing ever achieved in life without effort is failure.“
